Geo-Modifier.

Learn what Geo-Modifier means in modern search and SEO.

Part of speechnounOriginGreek geo (earth) + Latin modificare (to limit, to measure)

A location-specific keyword added to a search query to indicate geographic intent — such as 'SEO agency London' or 'dentist near me'.

A geo-modifier is a location term appended to a keyword to specify geographic intent. Examples include city names ('plumber Bristol'), region names ('SEO agency South East'), country terms ('tax advice UK'), or proximity phrases ('near me', 'nearby'). Geo-modifiers transform a general query into a local intent query, triggering Google's local algorithm and the Local Pack result.

Types of Geo-Modifiers

Explicit geo-modifiers include specific place names embedded in the query. Implicit geo-modifiers are absent from the query text but inferred by Google from the user's location signal—'dentist' from a mobile device in Manchester triggers local results without any location keyword. Google's ability to infer location makes implicit geo-intent increasingly important to local SEO strategy.

Targeting Geo-Modified Keywords

Creating dedicated landing pages for each geographic market—with a geo-modified title, unique local content, embedded Google Map, local business schema, and local NAP data—allows multi-location businesses to rank for geo-modified searches in each target area. Thin, template-generated location pages with identical content except for the city name do not provide sufficient value and risk being classified as doorway pages.
