Brand Citation.
Learn what Brand Citation means in modern search and SEO.
A mention of a brand name online—with or without a hyperlink—that contributes to brand authority and entity recognition.
A brand citation is any mention of a brand name on the web—in articles, forum discussions, social media posts, reviews, or podcasts—whether or not it includes a hyperlink back to the brand's website. While linked mentions pass PageRank directly, unlinked brand mentions (also called unlinked citations or brand mentions) contribute to entity recognition in Google's Knowledge Graph and may influence authority signals independently of links.
Linked vs. Unlinked Citations
A linked citation passes link equity; an unlinked citation builds entity recognition and brand presence without directly affecting PageRank. Google's Gary Illyes and John Mueller have acknowledged that links are not the only way to establish authority—consistent brand mentions in contextually relevant publications contribute to how Google understands and trusts a brand. Converting unlinked mentions to linked mentions (by outreaching to sites that mention you without linking) is a legitimate and often efficient link building tactic.
Building and Monitoring Brand Citations
Build citations through Digital PR, thought leadership content, podcast appearances, industry roundups, and partnership announcements. Monitor citations using Google Alerts (free, limited), Mention, Brandwatch, or Ahrefs Alerts (which can detect unlinked mentions). Regular citation monitoring also serves brand reputation management—catching inaccurate or negative mentions early enables timely response.
